Prior to the last century, death was accepted as a normal part of life with most people dying at home surrounded by their loved ones. Today with the medical advancements we have made, enabling us to prolong life, death has become much more clinical. It has become a subject in our society which many find difficult to talk about.

 

For nearly a decade, I have cared for many individuals at end of life. I have listened to and talked with them about their fears, helped them to define what quality of life means to them, answered their questions about what to anticipate as their body declines, as well as what to expect in their final days and hours of life.

 

It has been my experience that if we can let go of some of our fears and allow ourselves to talk about death, it can be a very sacred and beautiful experience. By allowing ourselves to envision and share with our loved ones what we would like our end-of-life experience to look like, we can find a peace that might otherwise seem unattainable.

 

While many of my clients are of advanced age or facing life limiting illness, the best time to talk about your end-of-life wishes is when you are well, when it is not urgent, and decisions do not need to be made in haste. I consider it a privilege to provide Advanced Medical Planning guidance to clients of all ages.
